Uh...

The only thing that I can imagine is that Hollywood likes to play pranks on geeks. Specifically anime fans. They saw the minor furor over the whole Keanu-Reeves-as-Spike-Spiegel thing, laughed, and said, "Oh, you think that's bad? I'll see your Keanu-as-Spike and raise you a Zach Efron as Kaneda in Akira. Eh? Eh?" And then they sit back and giggle as the otaku run around in angry circles.

But seriously. What. WHAT?
