amatyultare: (don't ask)

random friday night notes

The Cambiata are awesome. Just saying.

It's fascinating to watch my boss get angry. He gets more and more energetic, but it continues to be an upbeat sort of energy, even when he's really upset. Very weird. (No, he wasn't angry at me, thank goodness.)

Three random links I am totally stealing from [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda:

THE AWESOME: . It's funny because it's so true.

THE NOT-SO-AWESOME: In fact, put me down as one of those whose reaction is something along the lines of NOOOOOOO! or perhaps WHYYYYYYYYY? Keanu Reeves set to play Spike Spiegel in a live action Cowboy Bebop movie. DAMMIT, FOX. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I don't necessarily dislike Keanu - or at least, not that much - but he is not at all a good choice for Spike. *sigh*

THE CRAZY-YET-AWESOME: The worst comic book, and best worst comic book line, ever. NOT SAFE FOR WORK, SCHOOL, OR SENSITIVE OR INNOCENT PEOPLE. You've been warned.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I am laughing audibly about Keanu...

wow

I MISS YOU!!!

Miss you too! It is funny, just also...upsetting.

Apparently Keanu Reeves is the major reason why it got greenlit in the first place, because he is a HUGE FAN and wants to be Spike more than anything in the whole entire world. Josh and I have been debating the economics of this movie for several weeks now. I think it will tank (it will sell only two tickets, and they will be to me and Josh), and he thinks it will do better than Speed Racer. We'll see.

Also, WOW. I used to read Tarot. I had a copy of issue 1 autographed by Jim Balent, actually (he and his . . . wife? partner? girlfriend? lived a couple towns over from Stroudsburg). I thought that series HAD to be done by now. They really kept the SAME recurring main characters for 53 issues? They didn't even ADD ONE? And yes, by the way, it is that bad. I love the art like crazy, but it is not a good series.

*sigh* Wanting to play a character doesn't mean you'd be GOOD at playing the character. Really, what was FOX thinking?

To be honest, though, this probably will make somewhat more money than Speed Racer. I don't think Speed Racer really had the attention of the younger/more casual fans, whereas Cowboy Bebop is new enough and mainstream enough to have that hype, you know? And make that three tickets at worst - even if it's terrible, I'll probably go see it. ^_^

Tarot...yeah. It's...yeah. (But that line is AWESOME.)

I honestly think the days of Bebop being mainstream are over. It's replayed on Cartoon Network sometimes, but not when the people currently pumping money into anime and manga are watching (they're in bed, because they have school the next day). I think it's a huge favorite among 20- and 30-something otaku . . . but there aren't enough of them to carry the movie, even if they all go. It could pull in some action fans who has no interest in anime and want to see things blow up, but Speed Racer didn't pull them. It could pull in film noir fans . . . but then again, The Spirit has terrible numbers (rightfully so, ugh). Josh doesn't know the numbers for Serenity (which is basically American Cowboy Bebop), but he SWEARS there are more Bebop fans than Joss Whedon fans, which I disagree with. I just don't see a second movie about interstellar bounty hunters--based on international source material, no less--going over well.

I HOPE I'm wrong, because if a second (well, third, counting Dragonball) anime-based movie tanks, we may not ever see the other ones already in production, much less any new ones. But then again, do we want to? I thought Speed Racer was just AWESOME, but for the most part, I'd rather see Japan make the adaptations instead of the West. I mean really, American Naruto? Ouch.

Oh, I think we all need to acknowledge that this could very well be an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE movie. Keanu Reeves. As Spike Spiegal. O RLY? They're turning only the first episode into a full-length movie, too--so, unless they seriously condense some storylines, that means no Vicious, no Julia, no Ein, and no Ed.

Can you tell I've had this conversation a lot? *lol* Like I said, I hope it does well if only to boost the reputation of anime in this country, but I'm very afraid it will only hurt us otaku in the long run.
