2007 memes, because why not?
Happy 2008, everyone! I again haven't been posting much on LJ...really there has not be a lot to report, as I have been spending my days mostly reading, watching movies and anime, and thinking. Since it's the new year, though, I figured I would do those two enduring end-of-the-year/beginning-of-the-year memes.
First, the question meme.
1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Went to Japan, worked in a restaurant (and as a sort-of quasi-bartender), stage managed a complete show in Brehmer.
2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I made any New Year's resolutions last year. I think I'll have some for this year, but I need to think about it a bit more.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nope.
5. What countries did you visit?
Japan! 2007 was the year of the Great Spring Break Trip of Awesomeness (GSBToA) to Tokyo, and it was fantastic.
6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Long-term direction? For the year to go by a bit more slowly?
7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
There weren't really a lot of big, important days for me in 2007.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Graduating. Followed by the Nutcracker, probably *laughs*
9. What was your biggest failure?
Being so lazy over the summer.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing more serious than a maybe-sinus-infection in the spring, and some assorted colds in the fall. Or does caffeine addiction count as an illness?
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I bought some pretty good books this year, both for school and on my own...but I may have to say my suit jacket (with my wonderful friends' gift certificate)--my first venture into 'business world' attire.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My always-supportive friends, of course.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
At times, my sister's, heh. Maybe Professor Crespi's?
14. Where did most of your money go?
School, gas for my car, books, energy drinks?
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting re-involved in theater; feeling at least like I really know *something* about China.
16. What song will always remind you of 2007?
'What About Everything' by Carbon Leaf
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? Happier, I think.
thinner or fatter? Perhaps thinner, but only very slightly.
richer or poorer? About the same.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Spending time with friends. Keeping in touch with people far away. Looking beyond Colgate.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I can't think of anything off-hand....
20. How did you spend Christmas?
Went to Eric's oldest son's apartment for a family gathering, then spent time at home with Mom and Eric and Erica
22. Did you fall in love in 2007?
Nope.
23. How many one-night stands?
None.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
I still don't watch that much TV, but Dilbert was pretty hilarious.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No, although I admit there are some people that I find more annoying than I did a year ago.
26. What was the best book you read?
Ooh, too difficult to choose.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
This being the year I DJed for WRCU, there are FAR too many to list.
28. What did you want and get?
Terry Pratchett's new book (thank you
lacontessa11!), a new cell phone, a plan for post-graduation.
29. What did you want and not get?
A Critical Languages scholarship *sigh* I didn't really expect to be chosen, but it would have been great.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I can't think of one in particular that had a big impact on me. I was impressed with OotP....
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 22--I spent the evening with friends.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Having enough shelves for all of my books. No joke.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Comfortable and reasonably flattering.
34. What kept you sane?
Music and my diary. My friends.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
None; I try to avoid celebrity crushes.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I really have not been paying much attention to politics recently... I was pretty interested in the China/Taiwan issue because of my paper on its economic repercussions.
37. Who did you miss?
My sister, for a lot of it. My friends when they were abroad (and Kris, except of course during the GSBToA and PCM)
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Probably Lindsey L.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007.
Most of my life lessons are about my life particularly, not general lessons. I learned that I work better for other people than for myself--not necessarily a good thing, as I also have difficult time every saying 'no' to something that other people want or need, even when it would be better (for my sanity, at least) to decline.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I'm not sure if it sums anything up, but it strikes a chord with me:
"Because I can, 'cause no one can stop me,
'cause it makes up for things I lost,
because I'm addicted to bad ideas and all the beauty in this world."
Second, the first lines meme.
January *pokes LJ* Hey, all. I really do not have a lot to report--I've been mostly reading, watching movies and anime, drafting various long emails, quietly worrying about what I'm going to be doing a) this summer and b) with my life after graduation (in less than a year--scary!), and sleeping a lot, of course.
The 'quiet worrying' didn't actually develop into coming up with a coherent plan until far later, sadly
February Where to begin....I guess I've been fairly productive so far this week, which is good.
March So, I haven't posted in forever. And by forever, I mean a bit less than two weeks, which is close enough to forever in LiveJournal land.
2007 was a year of me not posting much in LJ
April Happy April Fool's Day, all! RIOT pulled a very small stunt in Frank (the main dining hall at Colgate for those of you playing along at home).
That RIOT stunt was a lot of fun, actually--it involved replacing all of the signs identifying what food was being served with signs saying 'brussel sprouts'.)
May Tuesday night is party night--well, on finals week at least (since Wednesday is a 'reading day'). I, personally, am not partying, but there is much activities around the townhouses. Ah, Colgate kids....
June Erica got a cd called 'Pickin' on Modest Mouse', which is Modest Mouse songs done by a bluegrass band. I have never been that much into Modest Mouse, but this album is excellent.
July Things go on...not excitingly, but on they go. Work continues mildly amusing.....oh, and Mom and Eric are officially engaged. They went out 'mineral hunting' at a tourmaline mine or something today--Mom woke me up at 8 AM to ask if I wanted to go 'rock hunting' with them. I groggily declined.
August Is it hypocritical of me to be unhappy when American clothing manufacturers have a limited range of sizes, but I find this just kind of hilarious?
'This' was confirmation that Baby the Stars Shine Bright, a popular Japanese Lolita brand, only makes their clothes in one size.
September It's been a crazy couple of weeks back, but I'm almost starting to get into a routine--hence I break my LJ silence to make my traditional Beginning of the Semester Report, starting with my classes.
October And I...am officially really angry.
This was during the whole BAC Not Giving Ballet Company Money drama, which was eventually resolved.
November--during November I didn't post in LJ at all (blame Nutcracker)
December Wow. It's been a month and a half since I've posted. That's CRAZY...possibly the longest I've gone without posting since I got LJ my freshman year at 'Gate.
Once again, I didn't say the most interesting or original things, at least as first lines, in LJ this year. There's always next year, though....
In other news, Mom gave me two great books for Christmas--reading them has been part of what I've been doing this past week. Mao's Last Dancer is moving, and gives a very interesting perspective on what it was like to live in rural China (a perspective that is far too often ignored, as city residents have much more of a chance of education, financial success, and therefore the ability to have their stories told). Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler's second book, is also great--I would call it evocative.
With these books, however, plus the books I kept from this semester's classes and after having one of my small shelves stolen by my sister...the bookshelf situation in my room is somewhat critical. You laugh, but it's true! There are books stacked all over my room. Clearly I need to go on a shelf-buying expedition.
Argh, must get offline *curses dialup* Later, all!

You can never have too many bookshelves . . . it makes finding books so much easier. I have four, and I'm considering confiscating a fifth from my parents.

Shelves are kind of a necessity of life--for me, at least. I only have two--and while I have fewer books than you do, two is not NEARLY enough. I haven't even unpacked any of my manga yet, because there's no room for it. *grumbles*
