Well, only a couple of weeks late, here's 2011 in review (the meme).

2011 )
amatyultare: (pass me that textbook)
Sooo, it's been two months since I've posted in LJ. I should try to post a little more often. And in that spirit, the traditional even though I didn't do it last year end-of-the-year meme.

2010 )
amatyultare: (Default)
Work today was okay - a typical Monday - except for the technical emergencies that kept turning out not to be emergencies. I mean, emergencies that aren't emergencies are the best kind to have and all, but it was getting faintly ridiculous by non-emergency #3.

Anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] dalek_sellis posted this meme. And I hadn't done a meme in a long time, but vaguely remember them being fun. So I figured, why not? And stole it from her.

Apologies to those on my f-list who are members of [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck and therefore have already seen this. (BTW, it's an amazing community and I do recommend it). I'm borrowing [livejournal.com profile] deliriumdriver's Bold-o-Vision, with the addition of italics for snarky side-comments.

Woman decides to get her college-aged son a debit card, on the belief that this will teach him to 'manage his finances'. She feels that "when he [runs] out of money, the ATM [will] tell him 'No, you'll just have to wait until next month'." (Why an ATM would drive this lesson home harder than a plain old empty wallet is left unexplained.)

Woman does no research and gets her son a debit card that has 'overdraft protection'; overdrafts are honored, and the overdrafter is charged a fee for the service. Woman claims that this was not made clear to her. (I doubt it. Banks that offer this service generally ADVERTISE it; my bank has it and it actually gives me a feeling of security that if I am in an absolute emergency and don't have money, I can use my debit card and then pay the fee later.)

Woman's son pays no attention to his finances, takes money out of an ATM that he does not actually have in his account, and gets charged an overdraft fee.

Wait for it...woman gets angry AT THE BANK, goes and rants to the bank manager, and gets the fee reversed.

My feelings, on hearing the above scenario, was something along the lines of "If they really didn't notify her of the feature, then she's right to be upset, although I still hope she was polite about it....but if she was notified of this feature and just didn't pay enough attention, well, let's just say I feel bad for that manager."

The editors at Good Housekeeping magazine feel differently. Apparently their reaction was, "This woman is a genius! Let's write a whole article about how you can make a fuss and cause headaches for all the customer service people you deal with and how that will save you money!"

Another tactic recommended by Good Housekeeping is to act out public displays of emotion and argue [your] way out of fees by gradually rais[ing] your voice until you get what you want. I kid you not; read an excerpt here or see a scan of the whole thing here. In my world, such behavior is called acting like a two-year-old and is to be strongly discouraged, not recommended.

There are certainly times where a company is in the wrong, and in those situations I firmly believe that one should be determined and assertive in getting one's issue resolved. However, I also firmly believe that there is really NO situation in which it is appropriate to act like a spoiled child.

(And, as one insightful commenter on [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck pointed out, "These suggestions stem from a conviction that workers who interact with the public are simple extensions of their place of employment rather than real people. Nothing could be further from the truth.")

By the by, this got brought to the attention of [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck because one woman read it and decided to try the standing-there-and-yelling-until-you-get-your-way tactic on a [livejournal.com profile] customers_suck member to get out of paying STATE SALES TAX on a purchase. Strangely enough, it didn't work.

And now to cheer me up...MEME!

Happy 2008, everyone! I again haven't been posting much on LJ...really there has not be a lot to report, as I have been spending my days mostly reading, watching movies and anime, and thinking. Since it's the new year, though, I figured I would do those two enduring end-of-the-year/beginning-of-the-year memes.

First, the question meme )

Second, the first lines meme )

Once again, I didn't say the most interesting or original things, at least as first lines, in LJ this year. There's always next year, though....

In other news, Mom gave me two great books for Christmas--reading them has been part of what I've been doing this past week. Mao's Last Dancer is moving, and gives a very interesting perspective on what it was like to live in rural China (a perspective that is far too often ignored, as city residents have much more of a chance of education, financial success, and therefore the ability to have their stories told). Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler's second book, is also great--I would call it evocative.

With these books, however, plus the books I kept from this semester's classes and after having one of my small shelves stolen by my sister...the bookshelf situation in my room is somewhat critical. You laugh, but it's true! There are books stacked all over my room. Clearly I need to go on a shelf-buying expedition.

Argh, must get offline *curses dialup* Later, all!

Ama is lame, and does memes when she should be getting some sleep. She also apparently feels like talking about herself in the third person....^_^

To be honest, considering the rate of my insomnia, I won't be getting to sleep until at least 4 AM anyway, so twenty more minutes shouldn't hurt. On with the meme! (Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] lacontessa for those playing along at home.)

I'll sing you a song, and I hope that you don't mind... )

That was fun...although it did take more than 20 minutes.

Since I feel like I haven't updating this thing substantively in forever: Nutcracker is going well, but will be much better once we have a complete budget and a proposal into the Budget Allocation Committee. Anime Society (although I have stuff to do for it) and WRCU cheer me up (doing nothing but choosing and really listening to music for an hour--why didn't I start DJing for WRCU earlier?). Classes are going fairly well in general; I'm a bit frustrated with the slow pace of my Chinese Economy class but I'm keeping up really well in everything so far. Right now I'm trying to think of topics for my two large-ish papers this semester (10 pages is no longer very daunting to me). Chinese class this semester is very reading and writing heavy, which is probably not good for my long term language development but tends to make me feel much more confident in class. My other big focus is working on 'after Colgate'. Right now I am working on my personal statement. So difficult!

In summary, my life at present is reading and flashcards for classes, budgets and organization for extracurriculars, and controlled panic on the real-life front. Oh, and I can't forget my insomnia, which has gotten quite a bit worse; the problem is that if I don't get to sleep pretty quickly, I get bored and either get up and do something or start planning things in my head--both of which keep me up. At least it's not really affecting my quality of life (yet). But in any case, things are mostly going well.

Now, an attempt at sleep. Later, all!

So, watched OotP today. I want to watch it again before I commit, but tentatively--I think it's my favorite of the movies. Yeah, they had to leave a lot of stuff out, blah blah, but it had a lot of artistry while still respecting the story and themes of the book (which was my big gripe with the third and fourth movies). More later? I want to reread OotP, at the least, before I say much about the movie as an adaptation.

Kind of late, but: the interview meme! [livejournal.com profile] tarimanveri asked me five questions; answers are below. Comment with 'interview me' and I'll ask you five questions of your own to answer.

As bewildered as a bee in an eggcup bonnet... )

I'm trying to reread all six HP books before Deathly Hallows is released...and I'm almost at the end of PoA, which I want to finish (it's been a while since I've read any of the books). Later, all!

2. I will respond by asking you five questions of a very intimate and creepily personal nature. Or not so creepy/personal.
3. You WILL update your lj with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

(I will include my answers to E's questions once she asks them, but I wanted to be the first to post this ;-)

Not much is going on. Mom has a new sorta-boyfriend who seems nice enough (he's got an interest in China which is kind of cool). She had him over for dinner tonight and made yummy Thai fried rice and beef with broccoli, and fresh spring rolls. Now she's talking religion with Eric while I relax and don't have to socialize by hiding in my room, *sweatdrop* Well, I AM an introvert....

Manga mini-report: Furuba 13=much Ayame and Momiji love. Aww.... The T/K romance keeps getting cuter, and I'm kind of proud of Yuki. Also, it wasn't until the third time I read it that I realized we had probably 'met' (not really) Ren for the first time! (Ren is Akito's mother).

Full Moon 5=Izumi! I was struggling not to ship Izumi/Mitsuki at one point....anyway, the ending is very ?!?!?!? My main feelings are (a) What??? What's really going on here? (b) I totally should have seen the pattern from KKJ (c) I want to know what this really means; I have never been more tempted to read scanlations in my LIFE (but don't worry, K, I won't)!

Lalalala, my life is boring. I have to go write other things now, so later, all!

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] yubsie because really, who could resist?

1) Make a list of 15 characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment. (That way you're not leading the questions asked to fit the characters.)

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the screened comments.

For example:

"4, 6, 12 & 15 are starting a band together, what is their name and what kind of music do they play? Also, who's the lead singer, and what instruments do the others play?"

3) After your f-list has asked enough questions, round them up and answer them using the 15 characters you selected beforehand, and then post them.

I will probably post the answers on Sunday as I have...things going on...both Friday and Saturday).

The subject heading, if anyone was wondering, is from one of the earlier albums from the Dandy Warhols. Very....different than their later stuff. I've actually been listening to a lot of new music; apparently Sarah Lawrence kids listen to tons of lesser-known bands and so I doubled my playlist by grabbing a bunch of stuff from E's computer. That's right, doubled.

Speaking of E, let me go through her visit home really briefly.

•I went to Boston to pick her up and drove in circles around Boston for, I'm not kidding, two and a half hours, first because the directions I got online were outdated so the exit number they told me to take no longer existed, and then because the entrance to the bus station's parking garage ramp was about half a mile from the actual bus station, and in fact from the garage as well, so it took me a long time to find it. Then I waited at the door where E's bus would be coming...and waited....and waited...while E had gotten there about 15 minutes before I parked and promptly went down to the street figuring I would just wait outside the main doors for her. We both waited for another hour, until E borrowed some random kid's phone and called me to ask where I was.

•On St. Patrick's Day I went with E to her friend K's apartment at University of Maine at Farmington, where we proceeded to wander around in search of an actual party. We found one, but it was really annoying and around the time I started feeling a temptation to shake one girl who had made out with five people in the span of twenty minutes, we left. We still had fun, though, and I got to try an Irish Car Bomb (except it was girly-style, without the whiskey).

•At various times of the week, E and I both got sick. As in, throwing-up sick. Has anyone ever gotten an eye hemorrhage from throwing up before? I had a blood blot on the inner corner of my eye for more than a week. Very strange.

•Speaking of eyes, E will officially be spending the summer working for a local optometrist. (Unless she goes to Turkey. Long story.) No, she's not interested in optometry. The doctor just really likes Italy, sponsored her trip to Italy, and now thinks of her whenever he has a job opportunity, apparently.

•At one point during her break, E was making us falafel. Falafel is actually fried, so she was heating up some oil, and the oil caught fire. She tried to pick it up (also what she was planning on doing with it, I don't know), but it burned her hand a bit, so she dropped it onto our (varnished, hardwood) floor. Mom grabbed a potholder and threw it outside, and managed to put out the fire from there. The pot is completely blackened, and there's a charred circle on our kitchen floor, but luckily no one was seriously hurt.

Two days later Mom emptied an ash tray with a still-burning cigarette into the (plastic) trash can in her room. By the time I noticed the smoke it had burned a hole through the bottom of the trash can and left a mark on the floor. No injuries at all this time, but all of Mom's clothes smell like burning plastic now.

Ah, good times. (hah)

I don't have work tomorrow, which is bad for my paycheck but GOOD for my sanity. So tired....maybe I'll go to bed early. Later, all!
amatyultare: (Default)
Okay, not really that exciting, but...

Do you trust my taste in music? Pick one number from 1 to 1074 and I'll find the corresponding song in my playlist. I'll upload it for you to grab. When you've gotten a song from me, go post this meme in your own journal, replace the number with the number of songs YOU have so I can grab a random song from you.

Please keep in mind that the uploading will go SLOWLY because of the evil dialup. Therefore you will not get your song immediately. Patience, Grasshopper....

Just for fun.

Music Meme )

Watched 'Kamikaze Girls' last night. Very cute! I still like the book better....but yes, the movie is is good. Must get the soundtrack! I'm also tempted to hunt down some of the music from the J-Pop singer who plays one of the leads.

I should get to bed...later, all!

P.S. OMG K you MUST READ VOLUME 4 OF DEATH NOTE! There are.....some major developments. At least I know how they manage to keep it going for so long now.

After you die...
Reincarnated as Yourself

After death, you will be reborn again as yourself. You will live the same life, unbeknownst to you. However, you will have vivid moments of déjà vu, as you probably have now.

Because like E, I too have been tagged twice now

The first player of this game starts with the topic of "5 Guilty Pleasures" and people who get tagged need to write an LJ entry about 5 Guilty Pleasures as well as state this rule clearly. In the end you need to choose 5 people to be tagged and list their names.

1. Buying things. Mostly books/manga, movies/anime, and music (CDs and on iTunes). I really should be saving money, but.....*shrugs*

2. Staying up too late.

3. Skipping work (which I only have done once. Hey, it's a *guilty* pleasure.....)

4. Analyzing drama (okay, gossiping).

5. Rereading.

I tag....A, B, R, B, and S.

Very little is new here. I had a woman asking for a manager yesterday, who later threatened to punch that manager in the face (through the phone, presumably). Ah, good times. I feel tired all of the time these days, which I don't like, but what can you do? Besides go to bed at a reasonable hour, which makes sense except that it would mean being awake and outside of work (and driving to and from) for about an hour a day. I would have even less of a life than I have now. So, I'll stick with being tired.

Speaking of being tired--bedtime. Later, all!
