Back in 2014, I happened across a PacRim fanfic on AO3 with an intriguing description and clever tags.

Then I started reading it and immediately became obsessed. (This is, I gather, a pretty common phenomenon for readers of Designation Congruent with Things and Clean White Room’s work in general.)

So naturally, a fanmix.

This is…a pretty specifically themed mix. The idea is that Newt puts the first half together in a fit of - not emo, he resolutely resists the emo hipster Jedi thing, but melancholy, which is fair, after all, it’s been a rough few weeks, he cannot lie on that front, and so sometimes he just likes to listen to specific songs that resonate with the complexities of his emotional state. Which is fine, and normal, and not emo.

Except that Hermann reads the track list and gives Newt a look that’s a little bit pained and also possibly a tad horrified? And Hermann is wound up tight enough as it is, dude does not need more Geiszler-related angst in his life, so Newt decides to make another playlist of more cheerful songs, or rather to extend his initial playlist. (Hermann points out dryly, when Newt insists on playing the expanded mix to him, that the tone of the second half is not as much ‘cheerful’ as it is “an utterly bizarre mixture of resignation, personal triumphalism, and sentiment”.)

(Hermann pointedly does not ask about the artist duplication, probably because knows that Newt’s explanation will inevitably invoke Descartes.)

Oh man, while I do not claim to be good at it, writing in DCwT!Newt’s voice is SO FUN.

Track list - and illustrative/over-explanatory quotes - below the cut. The original Tumblr post linked to the specific chapters where each quote came from, but the work has since been pulled down from AO3.

AKA "Help I've Fallen Into an Ironic Fandom and I Can't Get Out"

In late 2013, Lindsay Ellis and her friends started a video series called Fifty Shades of Green (later retitled Booze Your Own Adventure), where they talked about YA paranormal romance tropes, and eventually wrote a satiric YA paranormal romance of their own, loosely based on the Cthulhu mythos. The book was titled Awoken, and it's still available for purchase on Amazon. It was both hilarious and unexpectedly compelling, and I ended up making a playlist for it.

Because what's the fun of making a mix without being able to expain what all the songs mean?

Dear Lord, I have managed to write something that is almost 6000 words long and yet will baffle all but maybe a dozen people.

Regarding the stories - I am so, so sorry. I took gigantic liberties with the plot and a bunch of the characters in order to make the story have a clean narrative arc. Also I left A LOT of characters out either because I didn't have a place for them in the story, I wasn't know much about the character, or I couldn't find a good song for them. (Also, I couldn't remember Noah's character's name, so I just called him Noah. Sorry!) (Also-also, notes are at the end.)

Regarding the songs - they tend to relate to a mix of the specific story and the character in general. Some are heavily on one side or the other; for example, 'Body' is obviously very story-driven. Probably the least story-related song is Mehru's, since it's reflecting her inability to move forward from the pain of her past. I obviously have a Lot of Thoughts about the song choices so, uh, feel free to ask about anything you want?

Track List (note that 8tracks only lets you listen to a mix 'in order' once):

  1. Body - Mother Mother

  2. Numb - Marina and the Diamonds

  3. Turn The Page - The Streets

  4. The Horror - RJD2

  5. Invincible - Pat Benetar

  6. Down And Out - Th' Legendary Shack Shakers

  7. Face The Music - Conjure One feat. Tiff Lacey

  8. Pyramid - Two Door Cinema Club

  9. Sacred Beast - Tally Hall

  10. "M" Is For Morphine - The World/Inferno Friendship Society

  11. Killer Queen - Queen

  12. Ulysses - Franz Ferdinand

  13. Born Again Again - Th' Legendary Shack Shakers

  14. Ain't No Room - The Vines

  15. Little Stranger - Owls

  16. Necessary Evil - The Dresden Dolls

  17. The Lady - Tally Hall

Once Upon A Multiverse )

Notes:

  • ‘The Beginning After The End’ is the title of a song by Stars

  • ‘Young Bold Soldier’ is of course a line from Turn The Page by The Streets

  • While I usually referred to Vana as ‘her’ during the game because it was easier, all shardminds are technically genderless. Therefore I’m using the gender-neutral pronouns ‘zie’ and ‘hir’ for Vana (and all Shardminds).

  • ‘The Ceiling Falls About Me, Ropes Tight Around My Wrist’ is a lyric from a Pinback song BBtone

  • 'Chaos Walking' is the name of a YA sci-fi series by Patrick Hess

  • ‘Good&Evil’ is the name of the Tally Hall album that both Tally Hall songs on this album come from

So it is official--I love vocal harmonies. LOVE them. This is probably why I dislike Sonic Youth so much, as they have a distinct lack of both harmony (downright dissonance, to be frank) and vocals.

Anyway, about music....I made a mixed cd/playlist. At the beginning of the semester. Yeah, never got around to posting it. SO, it's now the 'better late than never' playlist. Track listing with explanations are below--anyone who reads this LJ can get a copy if they want! Those of you on the Colgate campus, especially those with iPods, might want to get it directly from my computer as I don't have a whole lot of blank CDs around. Those of you not currently at the 'Gate email me your address or something and I can get you a copy.

Better late than never... )

I should have been asleep two hours ago. Oh well, such is life. Later, all!

P.S. *pokes updated LJ layout* Not a big deal, but don't they ever warn us about these things?
