Brisingr Chapters 51-58

Chapter Fifty-One: Mind over Metal

Eragon: Hi, Rhunön, here’s some brightsteel. Is this enough for a sword?

Rhunön: Several swords. Do I want to know how you got this?

Eragon: Not really.

Rhunön: So when do you need this? When do you need to leave?

Eragon: I should have left two days ago.

Rhunön: Ah. I’ll have to make it quickly with magic. I’ll be borrowing strength from you...

Eragon: That’s fine.

Rhunön: ...but you’ll have a sword by tomorrow morning.

Eragon: What about your oath?

Rhunön: Screw the oath. To the forge!

(Excessive description of building a fire, melting the steel, etc. designed to show off CPao’s experience with blacksmithing.)

Rhunön: So let’s talk about what style of sword you’ll need.

(Excessive debating over the style of the sword, designed to show off CPao’s knowledge of weaponry. It’ll be a hand-and-a-half sword with some slight differences to Zar’roc, although similar in design.)

Rhunön: So about that oath-thing...

Eragon: Yeah?

Rhunön: To get around it, I’ll put my thoughts in your mind and YOU’LL make the sword.

Eragon: But how is that any different than you making the sword?

Rhunön: Because I say it is.

Eragon: But!

Rhunön: Look, do you want the sword or not?

Eragon: Okay, if you say so.

(she takes over his body)

Eragon: This is so creepy.

Rhunön: Shut up, kid.

(Extremely excessive description of the making of the blade, designed to show off...you know the drill)

Eragon: I am really exhausted.

Rhunön: The actual making of the sword is done, I can sharpen it and so forth myself. Go to bed.

Eragon: Who are those two incredibly beautiful and glowing elves watching us?

Rhunön: Elf children. The only two in existence at the moment.

Eragon: *waves*

Elf Children: *stare*

Eragon: Bedtime.

Chapter Fifty-Two: A Rider In Full

Eragon wakes up and Rhunön gives him the sword with a short but elaborate speech about how this is the best sword she’s ever not made, even though she had sworn an oath not to. Is that the Kill Bill soundtrack in the background?

Eragon loves it. It’s blue like Saphira and beautiful and deadly and fits him perfectly. No, what to name it? I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t – after much debate and deliberation, Eragon decides to name it ‘Brisingr’ or Fire.

And when he formally names it, it BURSTS INTO BLUE FLAMES. And I burst out laughing. If a flaming sword isn’t a weapon fit for a Mary-Sue, I don’t know what is! This happens every time Eragon holds the sword and says ‘brisingr’.

Chapter Fifty-Three: Greaves and Bracers

Hello again, Roran. How lovely to see you again for another pointless three-page chapter.

There’s a long description of Katrina dressing Roran for battle. They say goodbye, finally. Roran joins the rest of the army as the Large Ending Battle of the Book, an attack on a major city named Feinster, begins.

Chapter Fifty-Four: Leave-Taking

I’m really tired; expect my commentary on these last few chapters to be brusque.

Eragon goes to visit Sloan, who successfully made it to Ellesméra. He’s being taken care of, but he’s not all that different. Eragon, who had hoped for an immediate epiphany, is saddened. GOD I am so tired of hearing about Sloan.

When they return to Oromis and Glaedr, Eragon and Saphira notice that their teachers seem to be prepared to travel. Glaedr is wearing a saddle and Oromis is in armor. They will fly to the edge of Du Weldenvarden together, and then Oromis and Glaedr will go to the elf army in the north of Alagaësia. Oromis feels that it’s time; his presence will seriously disturb Galbatorix and hearten the Varden immensely.

Eragon questions the wisdom of this; after all, Oromis can’t even cast powerful spells and Glaedr is missing a leg. Oromis responds that he had a stone with a ridiculous amount of magical energy in it (he’s been putting energy in every day for a century) and he has cast wards around them to protect them.

Nevertheless, they want to give Eragon and Saphira a bit more guidance and support. Therefore, Glaedr gives Eragon his heart of hearts. It’s a giant golden gemstone, which Glaedr produces with an action astonishingly like that of a cat throwing up a hairball. Now we know where that ‘dragons=cats’ idea came from….

Awed by this gift, Eragon and Saphira prepare to head out and back to war.

Chapter Fifty-Five: Flight

Eragon and Saphira part ways from their teachers and fly towards Feinster to join the Varden army. Tons of extraneous description, you know how it goes:

[They] flew without stopping over the ancient forest of the elves, soaring high above the tall, dark pine trees. Sometimes the forest would break, and Eragon would see a lake or a contorted river winding across the land. Often there was a herd of small roe deer gathered along the edge of the water, and the animals would stop and lift their heads to watch the dragons soar past.

Also, they tell riddles. What is it with CPao, riding a dragon for long period of time, and riddles? Eragon worries about the blood and violence of the coming battle; Saphira reassures him.

With a couple of days of hard flying, they reach Feinster. (No matter how many times I write that name, it never stops looking like something a college frat boy would be nicknamed). The Varden attack is already well underway, although there’s no clear advantage to either side yet. Saphira roars to announce their arrival and they are immediately contacted by Trianna. Arya, along with another elf, entered Feinster and are now surrounded by soldiers. Hurry, Eragon, you must save your lady-love!

Chapter Fifty-Six: Brisingr!

Fight in the Feinster! Saphira dives and rescues Arya and Pheromones Elf, who had sneaked into Feinster to try to open the gate. They defeat several soldiers, the city magicians run away from Saphira, and the group does manage to open the gate and let the Varden forces in. Eragon lets Roran and Arya know about Brom being his father, and Arya about Oromis and Glaedr leaving Du Weldenvarden, before running off to fight some more.

There’s a lot of street fighting. Eragon tries to talk the people fighting into surrendering, with limited success. Some archers hide in a house and try to barricade themselves; Saphira rips the house apart. Saphira’s pretty scary, actually. Then Eragon reaches the inner keep where the lady of the city lives. The gate is barred with magic, so he uses his flaming sword (that will never stop making me crack up, ever) to cut through both the physical bars and the magical wards. Angela shows up; her comments are (a) Flashy, isn’t it? (b) ‘Fire’ is pretty much the lamest name for a sword ever.

Chapter Fifty-Seven: Shadow of Doom

Arya and Eragon leave Eragon’s magical backup behind and head into the keep with Saphira. They find the lady of the town, and three magicians doing something intense with a fourth man. Lady Lorona was forced to swear an oath to Galbatorix but does not support him, and begs them to stop the spellcasters. They are attempting to make the fourth man into a Shade. Horrified, Eragon and Arya start battering at the wards around the three magicians.

However, as this is going on, Eragon starts getting visions of Glaedr and Oromis at the battleground near Gil’ead. They are fighting Murtagh and Thorn, and it seems to be going well enough until Galbatorix takes over Murtagh’s mind and starts fighting Oromis directly. He tries to convince Oromis to join the Dark Side Empire but Oromis, of course, refuses. They fight and Oromis loses his sword, which held many of his protective wards. Without it, he is fatally wounded and dies. Glaedr, enraged, tries to kill Thorn but is killed (in body) as well.

Eragon, who had lost consciousness during these visions, wakes up to find Arya being strangled by the fourth man who has indeed been turned into a Shade. Dammit. He’s even stronger than Durza, but during a brief and intense battle, Eragon and Arya jointly manage to kill him. They embrace (aww) and Eragon tells Arya briefly of Oromis and Glaedr’s deaths. They head down to Nasuada to make a full report.

Chapter Fifty-Eight: Sunrise

Last chapter! Eragon finds Nasuada and tells her about Oromis and Glaedr and how they died, and let her and Arya know about the Heart of Hearts. They are appropriately stunned. Glaedr is clearly in deep shock; they don’t disturb him.

Nasuada plans to keep moving her army forward towards Galbatorix’s fortress (of DOOM!).

Eragon and Saphira walk towards camp, utterly exhausted and depressed over the fact that they are the last free dragon and Dragon Rider in the world. In a sense, they are alone…but as they watch the sun rise, they remind themselves that they have many friends and allies, and rededicate themselves to the goal of defeating Galbatorix.

My money is on the 'Pheromones Elf' for being the God that Eragon met in the story XD

Question: What the HECK does ANY of this have to do with that stupid freaking subtitle?

Awesome summary though, I liked how it was balanced in that you pointed out how he has gotten better. That description though, it's a killer. If he'd just cut out all the shite no one cares about, maybe he could write a manageable book.

And Chapter 51 is my favorite of all of them. :)

Um, a lot of the 'plot' involves around Eragon and Saphira fulfilling promises the've made, either in previous books or in this one.

1. Eragon's promise to cure Elva
2. His promise to rescue Katrina
3. His promise to return to Oromis for more training
4. He also promises to support Orik in his bid for Dwarf King
5. Saphira's promise to fix the Isidar Mithrim/Star Sapphire

There are two other promises, but I don't recall them. The promises themselves, yeah, aren't actually that important to the plot. Most of the time you forget that it was a 'promise' until something is completed and Eragon is all 'check it off the list!'

Thanks! I was trying to be fair, because he has improved, but there were still many O.o moments. See, I think CPao is getting to the point where he could, with a good tough editor, write a pretty good book - but sadly he's now 'popular' and probably won't get the rigorous editing he still does need.

Ah yes, Chapter 51...huge dialogue infodumps about sword design and creation. It *was* fun to summarize, though, because the motivation for including all that info was so transparent that I felt justified in totally skipping it.

The whole book seems to be about promises made, but also about how to wiggle your way out of fulfilling a promise (made faithfully or forcefully), like the darn True Name change... which it makes it not-so-true anymore, does it?

Oh and the literary plot, i.e. the "soul hairball" that the dragons spit out, this will just help Stupid-human-elf-crying-boy defeat Galby... but that does not have to do with the name unless you count Eragon's promise to rid Middle-Earth of Sauron-DarthVader

I sort of mentioned it briefly, but in a confused sort of way (keep in mind at least a third of this summary was written between the hours of midnight and 5 AM, heh). I called it Brom's Obi-Wan Kenobi moment.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them.

Lady Lorona

Lady Lorona? Is that really her name?
Funny, we have a ghost in my country called "La LLorona". She has the head of a horse and the body of a woman. She cries out at midnight "Ay mis hijos" (Oh, my childen!), she murdered them because of an unrequited love.
Is she going to cry "Oh Galby, you bastard!"?

PaoPao names always makes me laugh.

Arguing with a tree.... WITH A TREE! "I don't know if the Minoa got what *she* wanted but we did"... great lover you are, Shadeslayer Quenching the sword during the forging with water alone is not possible, there is brine and oil as water evaporates around the blade and does not cool it down, it creates a steam protective layer. The sword catches fire when he so originally dubs it Brisingr, and he yelps and drops it! Oh my gosh, the world needs more Riders like you I'm almost done, thankfully. One more brick to go
