Hollywood depresses me like whoa these days, not gonna lie.
OH GOD MUST RESIST URGE TO PLAY 'HORRIFY THE TWILIGHT NOOB'. For my money, the best way to get a good sense of the books (in terms of plot, theme, and writing style) without actually having to read them is through Cleolinda (http://cleoland.pbworks.com/Twilight). Read her wiki summary first, then check out the recaps (she's hilarious).
Or if you're really pressed for time, this comic (http://lucylou.livejournal.com/566295.html) is absolutely dead-on (no seriously, that's EXACTLY what happens) while still being screamingly funny.
