You have GOT to be kidding me.

For the link-phobic, the above is a new article about how an appellete court has allowed the appeal of Roy Pearson, a former DC Administrative Law Judge, to go forward.

Roy Pearson, back in 2005, brought a pair of suit pants to a small DC dry cleaning shop to be cleaned and altered. Said pants were lost for a few days, then recovered, but Pearson claimed that the pants he was given were not the pants he had brought in (even though the tag number matched, etc). He demanded the dry cleaners reimburse him for the entire cost of the suit. They initially refused, so he sued them.

Facing significant legal costs, the dry cleaners attempted to settle three times, their last offer being $12,000 (the suit cost about $1,000) but Pearson refused. Instead he persisted in dragging them into court, claiming emotional suffering and that they had violated the implicit promises made by signs on the premises stating 'Same-Day Service' and 'Satisfaction Guaranteed'.

Between emotional-suffering damages, legal penalties for asserted violation of fraud laws (regarding the 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' sign, etc), legal fees for representing himself, and the cost to rent a car every weekend to drive to a different dry cleaner (?!?), Pearson was suing this small dry cleaning shop for....

$54 million.

Oh no, I tell a lie. He originally was suing them for $67 million. He later lowered the amount to $54 million.

The court found against him (what a surprise). And now he is appealing the decision.

I feel bad for the family who owns that dry cleaning store.

In other news, I am slowly working my way through Eldest. I found that the only way to keep reading without shouting at the book was to take notes. For any who are actually interested, there will be a detailed report once I am done.
