But I couldn't stop reading Fandom Wank's wiki. The actual posts get old fairly quickly, but the summaries of the famous dramas? Absolutely addicting.

(This post rapidly devolves into semi-incoherent rambling. You've been warned.)

In particular, I found a frankly epic tale that sort of boggled my mind. I don't know if anyone on my f-list besides [livejournal.com profile] tarimanveri ever followed HP fandom in its earlier years. I actually would LOVE to see [livejournal.com profile] tarimanveri's thoughts on the whole thing (after comps...hint hint), because I know that she DID follow fandom a bit, the same time that I did, and therefore will recognize some of the situations and names mentioned.

To be clear, I only ever 'followed' HP fandom - I certainly never aspired to be any sort of BNF, never wrote fic or anything, never even participated in LJ comment threads (I didn't have an LJ for part of the time, as these were the OLD old days on LJ where you needed to either pay or be invited to create an account). It wasn't in any sense a big part of my life. I simply lurked for the entertainment, innocent and happy.

Except not always happy, as there was plenty of drama - when isn't there drama? I rememer Fermatojam, Killiganhashope, and Pottersginny. I didn't participate, but I followed it, and was rightfully outraged by it. I think I even vaguely remember the Gryffindor Tower hate and msscribe 'losing her job' and later ensuing madness, although I wasn't really following fandom at that point.

So the question becomes, how much feeling of shock is natural, and what is overreacting, when you find out that a very small but accepted part of your life was probably all fake?

Trufax: even if you've never followed HP fandom - heck, even if you've never read the HP books - I highly recommend the narrative posted at the journal linked above. It's absolutely fascinating, in an 'I really could have lived without knowing there were such unbalanced people in the world who would create their own online attackers/stalkers in an attempt to claw their way into a fandom in-group' way.

Wow.

And now, at long last, to bed. Crap, I never did my laundry. ARGH.
