Chapter 15 - Lost In Space

Having made up her mind, Sadie decides to go and talk to Mr. Ellison. She asks him about whether Mr. Lord promised Lucey the part (doesn’t mention the sleeping with a student thing, because I guess that’s a side issue? ARGH) and he says he “had his suspicions”.

Upset and disappointed, Sadie says she needs to drop out of the show because of her Moral Convictions of how it’s unfair that she didn’t get the lead. Mr. Ellison understands, saying he feels like Mr. Lord is taking over the drama club from him unfairly the same way that Lucey took the lead unfairly from Sadie.

“Rumors shot through the student body like machine gun fire through pudding.” Oh, author. You really need to work on your similes. There is persistent speculation that Lucey and Mr. Lord are dating/sleeping together (even though Lucey and Nigel are technically still dating) and yet no one seems to take it seriously enough to bring it to the attention of, I don’t know, the school counselor? Or THE POLICE?

I need to stop focusing on this plot thread or I might actually have an aneurism.

“Picture a flyer tacked to a utility pole, fluttering in the wind, reading ‘Found; One wandering soul at Crudup High. Sixteen years old. No driver’s license. No focus. No passion. Muddling through.’ That would be the flyer of my life.” Look, I do feel bad for Sadie; she’s clearly miserable. And I’ve been in the situation where I feel like I can’t remain a part of something but desperately wish things were different and I could. But damn, this girl can overdramatize.

Sadie is inconsolable, and even Adrienne has deserted her; she’s busy with a boyfriend (yay!) and figuring out how to stage this Twilight musical.

In early November, Adrienne calls Sadie with a request: can she get Alex to help them with the show’s musical arrangements? (Alex does music? Earlier it was stated that music was his weak point and he was better at acting.) Sadie asks why they don’t just get Jocelyn, his girlfriend, to ask him. Or better yet, why doesn’t Adrienne ask him directly? It’s a school of less than 300 kids, he can’t be that hard to find.

But Jocelyn can’t ask him because they broke up, and Alex does his music editing on Sadie’s computer (because remember, his mom is poor and his computer is crappy), so Sadie needs to be the one to ask him. Sadie shoots the idea down, though, because she and Alex aren’t friends anymore and why would he spend so many hours away from his beloved sports to help the drama club he ~abandoned~?

Reminded of her former BFF Alex, Sadie goes from depressed to annoyed at everything. Her parents try to ask her what’s wrong, but she is uncommunicative. Oh, and by the way, her grades are slipping because she’s so distracted being grumpy.

This somehow leads into a monologue from her mom about how people are always trying different personas and it’s a mistake to pigeonhole yourself. And then they all start singing the Beach Boys at the dinner table. Okey-dokey.

Meanwhile, Nigel’s parents are visiting. Which is apparently hot gossip because when his parents are around he slicks his hair back like a prep and doesn’t wear a leather jacket. Oh my, how shocking. Sadie would never have had a crush on him if she’d seen him in chinos and a sweater instead of his punk-rock duds. Yawn.
