You know, I tried to read 'The Golden Compass' years ago (back in high school), and made it all of ten pages before I gave up. At the time I thought that it was the writing style that put me off, but that wasn't really it. It was that I intensely disliked the main character. She was so incredibly thoughtless; I couldn't identify with her and found her profoundly annoying. So I avoided the books for years.

However, now 'The Golden Compass' has been made into a movie, and I'd rather like to see it. But I prefer readinga book before seeing any movie based on it. So I got all three of the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy out of the library, steeled myself, and started reading 'The Golden Compass' yesterday afternoon.

Fifteen hours later, here I am, finished with the trilogy and frankly, kicking myself that I didn't read it years earlier.

I only have one question--WHY is this trilogy considered 'young adult' fantasy? I know the protagonists are children, but....so? Not only is there quite a bit of death and brutality, but there are a lot of abstract concepts that would, I should think, confuse most children.

It puzzles me. Anyway. It's already morning, so I should probably avoid going to sleep and throwing my sleep patterns even more out of whack then they already are.

New icon! I'm not really happy with the coloring, but such is life.

And now, to rant.

So first of all, reading Eragon immediately after finishing a trilogy of power and grace like His Dark Materials was not the best idea. And certainly at least somewhat unfair to Eragon. But I wanted to see if the book was 1) as bad as some of what I've heard and 2) as bad as the movie, which I watched with Eric and Erica a week or so back. So I spent most of the day reading it (and fighting off the urge to throw the book into the snow).

Wow. Where to begin?

First, to put things in context, I advise those who haven't read the book/seen the movie to read this review of the movie. Actually, I suggest you read it even if you've read the book AND seen the movie; the review is hilarious and also brings up most of my major problems with the movie.

Lengthy and annoyed rant ahead )

Ridiculously long rant over.....I think I'll go to bed now that it's all out of my system. Night, all!
