You know, I tried to read 'The Golden Compass' years ago (back in high school), and made it all of ten pages before I gave up. At the time I thought that it was the writing style that put me off, but that wasn't really it. It was that I intensely disliked the main character. She was so incredibly thoughtless; I couldn't identify with her and found her profoundly annoying. So I avoided the books for years.

However, now 'The Golden Compass' has been made into a movie, and I'd rather like to see it. But I prefer readinga book before seeing any movie based on it. So I got all three of the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy out of the library, steeled myself, and started reading 'The Golden Compass' yesterday afternoon.

Fifteen hours later, here I am, finished with the trilogy and frankly, kicking myself that I didn't read it years earlier.

I only have one question--WHY is this trilogy considered 'young adult' fantasy? I know the protagonists are children, but....so? Not only is there quite a bit of death and brutality, but there are a lot of abstract concepts that would, I should think, confuse most children.

It puzzles me. Anyway. It's already morning, so I should probably avoid going to sleep and throwing my sleep patterns even more out of whack then they already are.
