I decided not to go to the Borders midnight release; instead, I watched the sixth episode of 'Dollhouse' and then finished the book I was reading. This was a good choice. I now sort of feel like I've been hit on the head repeatedly - but in a good way.
The show 'Dollhouse' (the latest Joss Whedon show, for those of you playing along at home) has gotten mixed reviews, including from me. But we were promised that episode six would be The One. And...I really think it is.
Without delving into spoilers or the whole Echo thing near the end (I don't know what to believe about that), I have to note that Joss Whedon is such a master of twists that he used not only the story of his show, but HIS INTERACTIONS WITH/STATEMENTS TO THE FANS IN REAL LIFE, to blindside us. (And I wondered at moments, but I kept discounting my suspicions.) And wow, the implications...I may have shouted 'What? WHAT?!?' at the TV a few times. Joss, you are an evil genius.
Afterwards, I finished a book I've been working on for most of the week, 'Special Topics in Calamity Physics'. I picked it up several months ago - it was on sale in Borders and it looked mildly interesting - and finally got around to reading it. It was much more than 'mildly interesting'. I haven't had a book leave me gasping for breath, flipping back to check facts mentioned oh-so-casually in chapter one that suddenly have HUGE significance, for quite a while. It's not for everyone - I can understand why some people would find the prose style difficult - but I loved it.
